Drinking water on the US Virgin Islands? I am traveling to USVI. We'll be staying at Cinnamon Bay on St. John. Has anyone who's been there or anyone who lives on the islands know if I can drink the water? Do tourists usually buy water bottled? I know residents who are used to it are probably not worried about that, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Ants in the House! How do I get rid of them? Whenever it rains ants start coming into the house and I have no idea where they are coming from. They usually end up in the kitchen or front hallway. I've tried vinegar, cinnamon, bay leaf, soap...it seems to work at first but then they laugh it off and bring more of their friends in. It's also hard to sprinkle cinnamon when I don't know where their nest or entrance is. Is there a more permanent solution? I would prefer to not use some industrial strength toxins. thanks!
Is cinnamon bad for cats? I have an ant problem in my kitchen and I heard that cinnamon would work on keeping them at bay. I have two cats though and I want to make sure that cinnamon isn't bad for them. Can anyone help?
Do you know where Kenny Chesney lives on St John? I am wondering where he lives on St John, just so I know where on the island is my best chance to get a siteing. I know he loves it there, and I know he lives near Cinnamon Bay. But any other info would be helpful. Thanks

What are the rules of Indian Spices? According to this article ( http://www.slate.com/id/3529/ ) a lot of chefs are influenced by Indian cuisine, but because they aren't trained in it, sometimes they use the spices wrong. As an example it mentions that you should never use turmeric raw. Personally, I didn't know that about turmeric. I wonder what else I have to learn. Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_food ) lists some of the important spices in Indian cuisine: chilli pepper black mustard seed cumin turmeric fenugreek ginger coriander (leaves as well as 'seeds' which are actually fruits) asafoetida cardamom cinnamon clove nutmeg bay leaf mint leaf curry leaf saffron rose petal essence What rules or tips can you think of for using these spices? I would guess that some need heat to release their flavor, while others should be added near the end of cooking to retain their freshness? Perhaps some need to be taken out of the food after cooking, while others can stay in?
How do I get rid of little black ants in my house? I have tried all the natural ways.. sprinkling cinnamon, coffee grounds, cloves, bay leaves. It works until the cinnamon dries up or they find a new route. I have no idea where they are coming in from but have found them in every downstairs room in my house and it's getting worse. I try to keep things as clean as I can but I have 2 small children and a messy husband. I also have a cat so I'm not too sure about poisons. Please help! Thanks!

Garam Masala. What is in the Garam Masala I bought recently that makes it slightly perfumed? The ingredients listed are - coriander, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, bay leaves and ginger. I am familiar with most of them, so could it be the cumin or coriander?. Thank you all for the suggestions so far. It's very difficult to describe a perfume (or aroma!). I DO like this particular garam masala, I was just curious because it has such a distinctive aroma, with one unfamiliar one that seems to dominate that I cannot recocgnise. I use a lot of black pepper, ginger, cinnamon and bay. and although I use cloves mostly in pomanders or pot pourri, I do use them sometimes in cooking. I also realise that it may be a combination of spices as in aromatherapy or perfume - which is probably why I referred to perfume rather than smell.

Has any one got any tips regarding length of time needed in the oven and what heat etc...Im somewhat clueless in the kitchen, but im trying really hard this Vals day! STIFADO (GREEK STEW) Season meat with salt and pepper. Melt butter in a Dutch oven or heavy kettle with cover. Add meat and coat with butter but do not brown. Arrange onions over meat. Mix tomato paste, wine, vinegar, sugar and garlic; pour over meat and onions. Add bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves, cumin and currants. Cover onions with a plate (to hold them intact). Cover kettle and simmer 3 hours or until meat is very tender. (Do not stir). As you serve, stir sauce gently to blend. Makes 6 servings. Sounds yummy...my partner and i went to greece for our first holiday so im being kind of sentimental this year :)
spices and their uses? oregano, bay leaves, marjoram, sage, parsley, onion, thyme, garlic, black peppercorn, coriander, red chili, curry, basil, cinnamon, rosemary, paprika.
was it that stupid ? well i was eating dinner with my family last year during thanksgiving and my grandmother asked me if i knew the four seasons and i said yes SALT,PEPPER,CINNAMON and OLD BAY. So of course it was the wrong kind of seasons and now every holidays when we get together to eat i always hear "remember when Kendra told us the seasons" but its so annoying cuz it was a mistake.. BUT WAS IT REALLY THAT STUPID?

Help me I am lost? I am looking for a recipe that I saw a few days ago for a simmering fragrance for the holidays. You put the ingredients in a jar and the add water and food coloring, then simmer in a pot on the stove. You can reuse them over and over. The one I saw had cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange and lemon slices, and bay leaves. It was a holiday scent, if you have a recipe that is like this one with a Christmas scent- PLEASE let me know! Thank you and Merry Christmas. I want to give them as gifts so I also need to know what the directions are for how to use and stuff. Ok so I guess someone always has to be the rude one, I need the recipe not because I am not a creative person but because I have no idea what the amounts were and the directions. If you find this to be something that bothers you then please just dont answer.
Need some color suggestions for my living room....? We JUST bought a house and I am looking at colors to paint the living room. There are a lot of big bright windows in this room, one being a bay window, with a large half-circle window above. We own a gorgeous cinnamon couch and really love bold wall colors, but find that with the color of the couch Bold might be too much. My husband REALLY wants to stay away from any kind of pink/purple/burgundy, which would be an obvious choice, but he lives here too. I was also looking at a teal sort of color, but we have a long cold winter, and I worry that it'd just make it feel longer. Suggestions? (and getting rid of the hubby is not the answer!!)

**HELP with finding this cookie recipe, please?**? When I was a kid, I had a Betty Crocker New Picture Cookbook (1961) that contained a recipe for one of my very favorite cookies. It was a molasses / spice drop cookie that had about 1 TBL of apple cider vinegar added to the batter. It gave the cookie just a hint of tanginess and was wonderful. It also had ground cloves, cinnamon, molasses and ground ginger in it. The resulting cookie was puffy, like a "jumble" and soft with cake like texture. I used to "dress it up" a bit by topping it off with finely chopped walnuts or pecans prior to baking. Fantastic with coffee. I no longer have that great cookbook but I would LOVE to get a hold of that recipe again. Can somebody out there please help me with this recipe? I've tried "food tv network" but no one has come close to it. I am currently watching e-bay to locate that cookbook, but the bidding on the few nice editions I've seen is getting too rich for my blood. Many thanks to the great cooks & bakers who can help me out!!

horse name...again.? my last question (i accidently resolved it) was asking for a name for a horse that sounded like mary. well i found out (thanks to an answerer :D) horses answer to tones more than sounds (sounds like m or s). so i want a name for my new cherry bay standardbred mare. she is really quiet, affectionate and sweet. what about ruby? i like cute names like acorn adn cinnamon too but im not sure............im just talking to myself now. sorry. please help. aw pancake is so cute! - but it doesnt end with a 'y' sound. i cant rememebr if i said that so its my fault. thanks for the answers so far! keep em coming.
INVINCIBLE ANTS EVERWHERE help!? a couple weeks ago our kitchen was overrun with ants. we tried EVERYTHING, cinnamon, coffee, the little ant iggloo things, listerene, dishsoap, vinegar, corstarch, we dusted the yard several freakin times. finally putting bay leaves everywhere seemed to put a halt to their exploring. Now.... as of yesterday they are back and in bigger quantities.the kitchen is spotless! i tried new bayleaves, vinegar.... i tried drownding them with maple syrup in a bowl because i read it somewhere online. didnt help. thats gone now but the more i wipe away, the more show up. now they feel it neccisary to bite me when i wipe them up. my hands are covered in bites and money is a little tight right now so we cant afford a expterminator at the moment. what else could i do?? what else is there to try!!!? spelling correction***exterminator** haha. well i would also bite if trying to be killed. i tried to be nice and not kill them just make them leave, but it didnt work. :). i have small children in my home on a regular basis, so i really want to stray from harsh chemicals and posions. we found their original spot of entry, and sealed it. they seem to have found a new one.

Does your city have unique slang/attributes? I live in Thunder Bay and we have the following ones I haven't seen in other places: Shag - a party that a bride and groom put on before thier wedding to raise money for it. To go to one, you buy a ticket ($2 in advance, $3 at the door), drinks are only 2.50, you get free food (usually pizza, beef on a bun or lunch meat), there's tons of prizes you can buy tickets for (tv's, trips, bbq's etc). Plus free cab rides home Persian - A tasty treat similar to a cinnamon bun but with pink icing and sooo addicting. We also have the largest Finnish population outside of Finland. We're home of Paul Schaffer.
